FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What varieties do you breed?
We focus on three varieties: Paint, Black, and Splash. By concentrating on fewer color lines, we can apply deeper selection pressure and produce more consistent quality than breeders who spread across a dozen varieties.
How does the waitlist work?
Sign up through our waitlist form with your name, email, and what you’re looking for (variety, age, quantity). When birds become available, we contact people in order. There’s no deposit required to join โ we’ll reach out when we have something that matches your request.
Do you sell hatching eggs?
Yes, we offer hatching eggs seasonally when production allows. Hatching eggs are shipped with care, but please understand that hatch rates can vary due to shipping stress, incubation conditions, and natural fertility variation. We pack carefully and select eggs from our strongest producers.
Do you ship birds?
We ship chicks and hatching eggs via USPS Priority Mail. Live birds are shipped in proper ventilated boxes with heat or cool packs as weather requires. We only ship when temperatures along the route are safe for the birds. Local pickup in the Pittsburgh, PA area is also available by appointment.
Are your birds show quality?
We’re members of the APA, ABA, and American Silkie Bantam Club, and we cull according to the official standard’s defects and disqualifications. That said, we also breed to our own standard when it comes to fluffiness โ we want our birds to look like clouds. Not everyone in the Silkie world agrees with that emphasis, and that’s okay. Not every bird from a quality program is show-ready โ genetics involves probability, not guarantees. We’re transparent about each bird’s strengths and where it falls in our grading. Whether you want a competitive show bird or a high-quality backyard Silkie, we can help you find the right fit.
Can I visit the farm?
We’re not able to accommodate visitors at this time due to biosecurity concerns. Protecting our flock from disease exposure is our top priority, and limiting foot traffic is one of the most effective ways to do that. We appreciate your understanding โ feel free to follow along with us online and reach out with any questions.
Are Silkies good with kids?
Silkies are one of the most family-friendly chicken breeds. They’re naturally docile, easy to handle, and genuinely seem to enjoy human interaction. They make excellent first chickens for kids and are calm enough for supervised handling by younger children. Our breeding program specifically selects for temperament alongside conformation.
What makes a Silkie different from other chickens?
Silkies have several unique traits: fur-like plumage (feathers that lack barbicels), five toes instead of four, black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and a walnut comb. They also have a vaulted skull beneath their crest. They can’t fly, they go broody frequently, and they have one of the calmest temperaments of any breed.
